What disability support
tell us

We supply uniforms to disability support providers across Australia, most of whose staff never set foot in an office. Almost nothing about these conversations is about appearance. It is about being recognisable at a front door, sizing people you rarely see, and getting garments to a workforce spread across a region. This is what they actually say.

The pattern

The uniform is doing a job nobody wrote down.

What we usually find is a lanyard, a branded polo bought a few years ago, and a lot of staff in their own clothes. It holds together because the regular clients know their regular workers. Providers tell us the gap shows the first time somebody unfamiliar turns up — a new worker, a shift cover, a weekend fill-in — and the person at the door has no way of knowing who they are.

That is the point at which a uniform stops being about looking consistent and starts being about being recognised.

What they tell us

Five things disability support providers raise, nearly every time.

Drawn from the conversations we have with disability support providers rather than from any one organisation. Where a single client has said something better than we could, their story sits on its own page with their name on it and their approval behind it.

It is identification, before it is anything else.

A support worker arrives at a house where somebody may have been told only that “someone is coming at ten”. Providers tell us the uniform is how that person, or a family member answering the door, knows they have the right worker. Nothing else on this page matters as much as that one does.

Nobody comes to a depot, so distribution is the hard part.

In most sectors the garments arrive at a site and people collect them. Here there is no site. Providers tell us that choosing the uniform took an afternoon and getting it onto a workforce spread across a region took considerably longer — and that this is the part they would plan differently.

You are sizing people you rarely see in person.

A fit kit cannot go round a room when there is no room. Providers describe sizing by phone, by guesswork, or by sending a range and hoping — and they tell us the exchange path matters more here than the first order does, because the first order will not be right for everyone.

Not every situation calls for a visible uniform.

This is the consideration that does not come up in any other sector we supply. Providers raise it themselves: supporting somebody at the shops or at an appointment is not always a moment for a clearly badged worker standing beside them. What they want is the ability to be identifiable when it helps and unremarkable when it does not.

Garments are hard to get back.

With a dispersed, part-time and changing workforce, uniforms end up in cars and at home rather than in a cupboard. Providers tell us the practical question is not how to recover them but how to order in a way that assumes some will not come back.

What usually changes

The same four moves, in the same order.

Not a methodology — just what disability support providers tend to do once they decide to settle it, described without the numbers that only belong to the provider they came from.

01
Where it is worn, decided first

Which parts of the work call for a clearly identifiable worker and which do not. Providers who settled this before choosing a garment tell us everything after it was straightforward.

02
Sized remotely, with the exchange agreed up front

Because the first order will not fit everybody and pretending otherwise just delays the problem. The path back is the part worth getting right.

03
Shipped to people, not to a site

Per-person, to where the worker actually is, rather than to an office nobody visits. This is the single biggest difference between these orders and every other sector’s.

04
Ordered on the assumption that some will not come back

Quantities set for a workforce that turns over and works away from a depot, so a departure is not a problem.

How these are made

Nothing here is written by us and signed by them.

The order matters. We interview, we transcribe, we cut for length, and then they read it before anyone else does. If they want a line out, it comes out — and if they change their mind after publication, the story comes down the same day.

You don’t have to have a dramatic story. “It turns up and it fits” is a story, and it’s the one most people are actually trying to buy.

Anonymous is fine, and so is changing your mind

Nothing is offered in exchange

Sending this isn’t consent to publish. Nothing goes on the site until you’ve read the final text and approved it in writing — and it comes down again the day you ask.
